Free Wireless...McDonald's customers are loving it!!!

McDonald's Free WiFi in Australia

McDonald's Free Wireless

If you live in Australia and are passing by a local McDonald's, why not drop in for some free wireless access?  After several months of design and testing, McDonald's Australia has begun rolling out its free wireless internet access service to stores in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.  By March 2009 this will be rolled out to all 720 stores, providing consumers with one of the largest free wireless networks available in Australia.  It also signals an important shift away from the traditional but often costly hotspot model to what consumers really want, which is a free wireless service from their preferred cafe or restaurant.

Powering the interactive visitor services is a series of amigopod vma-1000 appliances deployed in a high availability configuration.  These control all aspects of the visitor registration, authentication, bandwidth quotas and session tracking.  The solution was designed and implemented by local partner Redbridge Solutions.  Working closely with Earthwave to deliver internet security and content filtering features, amigopod was able to integrate with existing wireless access points whilst interfacing to centralised monitoring and support tools.

In addition to the free wireless access, amigopod is also managing access for almost 1800 wireless hand-held terminals, used daily in the restaurants for point of sale and stock taking tasks.  The flexibility and interoperability of the amigopod platform is just one of the reasons it was chosen to manage all interactive visitor services for such a trusted and established global brand.  The end user feedback has been emphatic...they're loving it!!!
